Suburbia
by
Eric Bogosian
“"It is Chekhov on speed and twinkies”"– this is how the New York Times describes Eric Bogosian’s ironic American drama ‘Suburbia’.
A scarifying dissection of youthful disillusion that manages to be both appalling and appealing, ‘Suburbia’ looks at the ironies of a youth culture aspiring to creative career's with 'fame prospects' while real issues of global war and racial divides rage around them. This modern American play accurately portrayed the youthful rage and frustrations of the culture of today’s adolescence, searching for role models in a media saturated world.
Celebrated author Eric Bogosian is best known for writing and starring in the play and the film adaptation of "Talk Radio" (directed by Oliver Stone). For this work he was a Pulitzer Prize finalist and received the Berlin Film Festival "Silver Bear Award." His solo performances Off-Broadway between 1980 and 2000 earned him three Obie awards.
A group of teenagers hang out in front of a news agent awaiting the return of a musician friend who is now a rising pop star playing a gig locally. Meanwhile, Jeff has recently got himself discharged from military service and takes out his rage on Pakeesh and Norman who own the newsagent. They buy beers, eat pizza and discuss fears, sexuality and aspirations about the world they are living in.
